This issue of Sojourn focuses on the efforts we put forth and the successes and losses of our harvest. One of California's poorest counties, Mendocino, is undergoing the implementation of Welfare Reform, which has the potential of bringing new life to communities. The vision, challenges and commitment of Social Service providers may bring hope to those in need. 
     We continue our last issue's focus on community by talking with two generations of women living at Greenfield Ranch--Susan Pepperwood and Shelley McCoy. They discuss their experiences of the past twenty-six years in rural Mendocino County as part of a unique land-based community. 
     Our cover artist, Joanie Mitchell of Laytonville, highlights her experiences in Africa and Indonesia, sharing her love of drawing and batik and also her views on the complexities of fair trade. 
     Articles on land trusts, a book review about the insect world, and more previews of Y2K round out our Winter focus. 
     Our next issue will explore a variety of ways that women infuse their work and service with devotion to a higher unifying purpose, truth and reality.
